Optical 3D metrology give today the possibility to measure and virtualize accurately real part geometries in detail.
Therefore 3D scanning can be used as the starting point to investigate on the production process with the aid of specialized simulation code.
A complex Shell core for a turbo-machinery case casting was scanned in order to define its core-box and process parameters.

The mesh obtained with a Comet L3D 5M Structured Light System by QFP was optimized into MAGMA Core&Mold simulation software in order to better understand the production technics. It was possible to clarify the importance of the shooting machine hopper on the shooting phase and to control the heating of the pattern walls of the core-box for a uniform baking of the core with a minimized energy consumption.
